Affordable Luxury,Great Riverside Location

Customs House is situated approximately 100 yards from our front door and offers the best in Arts, Theatre and Cinema in South Shields.  It offers an impressive choice of films, shows and exhibitions, which are available to everybody.  The building itself was used as the Customs Post in the mid 1800s and the most part of it is infact Grade 2 listed,  so if you are a bit of an architectural buff then it is definitely worth a look.  To find out more about what Customs House has to offer you, please check out their website at: www.customshouse.co.uk

South Shields Ferry Landing is a pleasant 100 yard stroll down from Customs House. The ferries operate a service between South Shields and North Shields across the River Tyne.  They operate every half an hour and the price is £1.00 for an adult single fare and 50p for a child.  Two ferries operate, "The Pride of the Tyne," and the newly appointed, "Spirit of the Tyne."  Still moored alongside the ferry landing is the recently retired, "Shieldsman," who is taking a well earned rest after 30 years in service.  We would strongly recommend a trip across the river on Sunday mornings where you can buy or eat fish that has literally just come out of the sea at North Shields Fish Quay.  To find out more about the ferry timetable and prices, please view at: www.nexus.org.uk/wps/wcm/connect/Nexus/Ferry/Fares+and+tickets

The Riverside Area has something to offer to everyone and its on our door step! You can stroll 200 yards from our front door and find yourself right next to the riverside where you can see many comings and goings on the River Tyne.  If you enjoy fishing this is an ideal spot to sit down and relax whilst trying to reel in the largest catch.  If fishing is not your thing, then you can stroll along the riverside promenade and watch the," boats come in." Many large ships and tankers make their way in from the North Sea - 2007and 2008 saw the visit of the QE2 and Feb 2008 welcomed the Ark Royal, which brought many visitors to the area, we have even seen a full Rig towed in.  Its always a good idea to have your camera with you.

We allow dogs to stay at our guest house and strongly recommend that you take them for a well earned walk around the riverside area.  There is a large field right next to the river and your dog will enjoy the freedom, please remember to take your doggie bags as this is a clean up area.

Now, if a walk around has made you thirsty, then why not chill out and relax in one of our three local public houses.  The Riverside sits at the top of Mill Dam and is an ideal place to sit back, relax and enjoy a drink, the staff are very friendly and will do their utmost to make you feel welcome. For sports fans there is a large screen that shows all the major sporting events. Next door is the Waterfront.  For the more lively, the Waterfront has a late licence at the weekend so if you fancy a dance then this is the place to be.  Last, but certainly not least, The Steamboat run by Joe and Kath, will take you back in time with its nostalgic furnishings and decor and friendly service.  The Steamboat is renowed for its great selection of ales and beers and has won several awards.  There is a great dukebox too so you will definitely find music to suit your mood

The Seamans Mission is our closest neighbour and is a charity and part of the Anglican church.  Seafarers can relax away from their ships, get local information, find help with problems, share worship and telephone or email home here.  To find out more information regarding the mission, please visit the following: www.missiontoseafarers.org
